North India · Courtly storytelling
The quicksilver poetry of Kathak.
Grace, cadence, and the quicksilver poetry of North India.

“Every spin is a sentence; every footfall, a syllable.”

The Tradition
Storytelling carried on swift feet
Kathak grew from the kathakars — wandering storytellers — and matured in the courts of North India, where Hindu devotional themes met Persian elegance to create a dance of narrative, rhythm, and spectacle.
It is a conversation between dancer and tabla: rapid footwork (tatkar) that speaks in syllables, spins (chakkars) that suspend a moment in air, and gestures that shift seamlessly between god, hero, and audience. At Lāsyamṛta, we build this conversation one beat at a time.
Tatkar — rhythmic footwork
Rapid, precise footwork that speaks directly to the tabla in shared language.
Chakkars — the spin
Building the control and stamina behind Kathak’s signature whirling turns.
Storytelling through gat
Narrative mime that shifts fluidly between characters within a single verse.
Courtly elegance
The upright carriage and refined hand language shaped by centuries at court.
In Practice
